In the square founded in Varzi in 1275 by the Malaspina marquises when they built the castle, positioning it to defend the already existing village, the Tamburelli family five centuries later built a magnificent palace, now the town hall, a symbol of prestige and importance for the local community.
History and prestige
The square was originally designed as a place of defence for the pre-existing village. The presence of the castle ensured the safety and protection of people and goods within its walls.
It was in this place rich in history and power that five hundred years later the Tamburelli family, with their refined taste and desire to create a residence of great splendour, decided to build a magnificent palace in that very square. Palazzo Tamburelli, with its majestic architecture and elaborately worked decorations, became a landmark for the city.
Today, the palace houses the municipal seat, serving as the administrative centre and representative place for the local government. Its presence adds a touch of elegance and grandeur to the square, highlighting the history and culture of Varzi.
The destiny of Palazzo Tamburelli
The Tamburellis had made their fortune by trading in cereals and other necessities for the passing armies and the troops stationed in Varzi. Thanks to this activity, they had amassed a considerable fortune, becoming one of the most influential families in the area.
Over time, however, the Tamburelli family began to decline. Adverse circumstances and socio-economic changes led to the loss of their wealth and influence. Inevitably, the sumptuous palace became a financial burden on the family.
In 1868 the building was sold to the widow of the Marquis Baldassarre dei Malaspina di Pregola. This transition marked a significant change in ownership and a new era for the palace. The Marquis's widow, aware of the historical and architectural importance of the building, decided to bequeath it to her sons, Antonio and Rodolfo.
The new destination
After Antonio's death in 1924 and Rodolfo's in 1925, the palazzo was acquired by the Municipality of Varzi. The Municipality's decision to acquire the building reflected the importance of preserving and enhancing the town's cultural heritage. The palazzo, with its history and central location, proved to be a unique opportunity for the Municipality to have a prestigious and historically significant municipal seat.
Architecture
Palazzo Tamburelli is distinguished by its imposing brick façade, which lends a strong yet elegant character to the building. Further enriching the exterior are wrought iron balconies that add a precious aesthetic detail.
On the main floor of the palace is the Council Chamber, a room of great importance and prestige. Here the elements of luxury and refinement reach their zenith. Marble fireplaces give the hall an even more welcoming atmosphere.
The frescoed ceilings are a true artistic treasure. Skilfully painted views and landscapes adorn the ceilings while the 'Genoese-style' floor has the coat of arms of Varzi at its centre.
From Piazza delle Caminate to Piazza del Municipio
The 'Caminate' square has a fascinating history dating back to 1275, when the Malaspina marquises decided to build the castle in an elevated position above the pre-existing village. The square was opened to leave space between the fortress, which had already been partly built, and the communal dwellings, thus creating an area that could serve as a resting place for passing caravans. Today it is the town hall square.
