Christmas is also a time for markets, with their magical atmosphere and the scent of sweets that fills the air. An atmosphere that manages to create a sense of wonder and joy that fascinates young and old alike, and that can also be breathed in Oltrepò Pavese, where markets are scattered in several villages. The most famous? That of Bagnaria.
Santa Claus arrives in Bagnaria
The Bagnaria Christmas Market, held every year on 8 December, is one of the most eagerly awaited seasonal events in Alto Oltrepò Pavese. The medieval village is filled with many stalls: dozens and dozens of stands of local craftsmen, artists and producers. In Piazza San Bartolomeo, the music of the bagpipers fills the air as Santa Claus arrives at the Santa Claus Village. People warm up with chocolate, mulled wine and excellent tastings of typical products.
Zavattarello, too, does not miss the traditional appointment on the day of the Immaculate Conception. In Piazza Dal Verme and in the streets of the village there are stalls selling handicrafts, hobbies and Christmas gifts. Entertainment for children and guided tours of the Dal Verme Castle.
Other events in December
On the second Sunday in December, Ponte Nizza brings Christmas closer. Among the stalls selling typical products, refreshments and mulled wine, there is no opportunity to miss a selfie with Santa Claus. Children send their Christmas letters, hoping that their wishes will come true. In mid-December, the village of Fortunago comes alive with nativity scenes, Christmas music and a colourful market. At the same time, the medieval town of Varzi also lights up: the narrow streets of the historic centre are transformed into a Christmas village, with local craftsmen selling their wares and tasting all sorts of delicacies. Santa Claus will also make a stop in the main square of Borgoratto Mormorolo and Godiasco Salice Terme.
An explosion of colours and lights
The Christmas markets in Oltrepò Pavese are famous for their lively and festive atmosphere, which immediately captivates every visitor. The stalls and small wooden houses, decorated with sparkling lights and Christmas decorations, create a fairytale setting. A touch of magic.
Handicrafts and unique gifts
The stalls are full of handicrafts and unique gifts, making Christmas shopping a pleasant and surprising experience. The markets are full of items handmade by local artisans: Christmas decorations, toys, scented candles, handmade jewellery. An opportunity to buy special, often personalised gifts that cannot be found anywhere else, adding a unique touch to Christmas celebrations.
Culinary delights
One of the best things about a Christmas market is the range of food on offer. The inviting aroma of cakes, biscuits, hot mulled wine and spices fills the air. Then there are the traditional dishes, usually accompanied by steaming polenta.
Entertainment for young and old
As well as shopping and eating, Christmas markets offer entertainment for the whole family. There are often live music performances, Christmas choirs, concerts and plays to add to the festive atmosphere.
