Borgoratto Mormorolo

Located in the picturesque Coppa valley in Oltrepò Pavese, the municipality of Borgoratto Mormorolo is made up of two ancient souls that testify to the historical and cultural richness of the territory. The name itself reflects the essence of these places, combining the name of the village, located in the current town hall area and so called because of the steepness of the terrain, with that of Mormorola, a name that since the 13th century has designated the local parish church, heir to an ancient farm belonging to the Lombard monastery of San Colombano in Bobbio. Borgoratto was united with Mormorolo on 5 March 1863, further consolidating their historical link.

Longobard heritage

In Longobard times, this area was an important link between Pavia, the capital of the kingdom, and Liguria. It was here that the monks of the monastery of Bobbio developed one of the most important farms dedicated to the cultivation of vines and wheat.

The Parish Church of Saints Cornelius and Cyprian

The parish church, which corresponds to the current parish church of Santi Cornelio e Ciprianostands alone above the village, along the road that leads to the hamlet of Inveriaghi and then to Costa Cavalieri and Valverde. Over the centuries, the building has undergone various restorations that, while altering its original character, have managed to preserve some elements that testify to its original Romanesque architecture. The parish church has also been the subject of archaeological excavations that have revealed traces of the early Middle Ages, when it was known as Memoriola. A fascinating Roman remains can be seen on one side of the bell tower, where a small white marble head is walled in.
