Cecima

Index

Cecima, a characteristic town in the Staffora Valley, has an ancient history that dates back to the early Middle Ages. The first official document in which the name of the village appears dates back to 943, when Hugh and Lothar confirmed the possession of the territory to the Bishop of Pavia, Litifredo.

Walking through its streets today, it is possible to breathe in the atmosphere of times gone by, thanks to the narrow cobbled streets and exposed stone walls that testify to the village's medieval origins. Every corner of Cecima tells a story: a true immersion in a fascinating passageway full of traditions.

The Church of Saints Martin and Lazarus

One of Cecima's main attractions is the church of Saints Martin and Lazarus, located on a natural terrace offering a spectacular view of Mount Penice. This place of worship has a troubled history, having been rebuilt several times due to collapses and damage.

Its last reconstruction, in 1460, gave the building a late Lombard Gothic style. Despite the historical vicissitudes, the original façade has been preserved and today represents a valuable architectural element that deserves to be admired. The interior of the church preserves works of art and frescoes that narrate religious episodes and reveal the artistic talent of the masters of the time.

The Castelliere of Guardamonte

In the Cecima area, on the border between Lombardy and Piedmont, lies part of the vast "Castelliere" of Guardamonte, an important pre-Roman settlement discovered in 1951 on the ridge between Val Curone and Val Staffora. The archaeological site has yielded numerous finds, including artefacts and furniture, which give us valuable information about the life of the ancient civilisations that inhabited the area. The urban influence of Guardamonte is remarkable and testifies to the presence of a developed and organised community. Scientists continue to study this fascinating site, trying to uncover its hidden secrets.
