Immersed in a nature reserve of more than 300 hectares, among meadows, clearings and the remains of a Malaspina castle dating back to the 12th century, lies a place of rare beauty: the Butterfly Garden of Valverde, a hamlet of Colli Verdi. Characterised also by the presence of a charming little church dedicated to the Madonna della Neve, this incredible setting is the kingdom of butterflies. An ode to nature and its splendour.
A kingdom of colour and enchantment
The Butterfly Garden is an ideal destination for an out-of-town excursion, but also a place of great attraction for scholars and nature lovers. Here one has the opportunity to encounter an incredible variety of butterflies, some of them even extremely rare. Every corner comes alive with an elegant and suggestive dance, with butterflies fluttering among the flowers and gracefully resting on the petals. A spectacle so beautiful that it leaves one breathless.
Oasis of biodiversity
Valverde thus becomes a place of enchantment and admiration, where biodiversity manifests itself in all its splendid variety. In addition to butterflies, the garden is a habitat for various plant and animal species.
In Valverde the fascination of butterfly watching
Immersed in breathtaking scenery and with a pair of binoculars at hand, the Valverde Butterfly Garden offers the opportunity to enjoy a unique butterfly watching experience and come into direct contact with nature. A kingdom of extremely rare specimens of lepidoptera, the only one of its kind in Lombardy, the Garden was designed in collaboration with the Department of Ecology of the University of Pavia, taking advantage of the special nature of the environment, which is particularly favourable to the preservation and reproduction of butterflies. Thanks to this scientific approach, the Garden is a true sanctuary for these delicate winged creatures.
Armed with binoculars, you can explore the paths of the Garden, observing the butterflies in their natural habitat up close and observing the variety of colours, shapes and behaviour. The garden is the place to learn and appreciate the fragility and beauty of the butterfly world. It is an educational and engaging experience, allowing you to understand the importance of conserving natural habitats and protecting endangered species.
Butterfly enchantment reduces stress
Some of the most beautiful insects in the world, with their colourful wings adorned with intricate patterns, butterflies not only give us a visually stimulating experience, but are also beneficial for the mind and body. It is scientifically proven that watching butterflies helps to reduce stress and relax. In short, the simple act of contemplating their delicacy and grace has a therapeutic impact.
A picnic area
In the Castello di Verde Park, where butterflies find their ideal environment to thrive, a picnic area with tables and barbecue facilities has been specially created. A perfect destination for a day out with family or friends, a refuge from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
The small church of the Madonna della Neve
Near the park is the small church of the Madonna della Neve, built by the Malaspina family between the end of the 16th century and the beginning of the 17th century: a small architectural jewel, made of local sandstone shards. The interior houses a precious fresco depicting Saint Barbara and Saint Lucy, two saintly figures of great importance in the Christian tradition.
