Zavattarello honey, nature's gift of floral aroma

The Oltrepò Pavese is an area highly suited to beekeeping. The presence of a rich variety of plants and flowers provides hard-working bees with an abundant source of nectar and pollen, allowing beekeepers to obtain a very high quality honey with unique organoleptic characteristics.

A hundred-year history

In this fascinating context emerges Zavattarello honey whose production was started over 150 years ago thanks to the enterprise of Count Luigi Dal Verme. Since then, this activity has become one of the main ones in the area, supported by the favourable climate and the absence of pollution. The growing interest around this extraordinary gift of nature led, in 2015, to the founding of the Oltrepò Montano Farmers' Association: about fifty members who dedicate themselves with passion to the production of fine honeys, following a strict specification that establishes the production only of chestnut, alfalfa, acacia, dandelion, woodland honeydew and millefiori honeys.

Sustainability and attention to bee health

The production of Zavattarello's golden nectar is carried out using sustainable beekeeping techniques that respect the environment and protect bee health. Local producers are committed to responsible hive management, so as to preserve biodiversity and promote the well-being of pollinating insects.

A unique taste with a floral aroma

It is thanks to this constant care for nature that Zavattarello honey can boast superior quality, a perfect harmony of flavours and a floral bouquet that enchants the senses.

The flavour of the honey may vary slightly depending on the flowering prevailing during production, but in general it is characterised by a delicate sweetness and a pleasantly enveloping floral aroma.

Beyond Zavattarello: the presence of beekeepers in the Oltrepo' Pavese area

In addition to Zavattarello, considered the undisputed honey capital, other localities in the Oltrepò Pavese Mountain Community are passionately dedicated to beekeeping. Montalto Pavese, Menconico, Fortunago and Varzi are just some of the towns where you can meet skilled beekeepers and discover their excellence. In these communities, the culture of honey is deeply rooted, handed down from generation to generation, and represents an invaluable resource for the area.

Un simbolo di identità

Zavattarello honey and its 'colleagues' are authentic treasures, fruit of the love and dedication of local beekeepers, sensitive to preserving and enhancing natural resources. Zavattarello honey, in particular, embodies the very essence of the territory. Every teaspoon of this golden ambrosia encapsulates centuries of history and tradition. Its production is a true ritual that takes place following artisan methods handed down over time.

The privileged climate, characterised by hot summers and mild winters, favours the lush flowering of plants, creating an ideal environment for bees. These tireless insects, armed with their iridescent wings, devote themselves tirelessly to collecting nectar, moving among the colourful flowering fields that dot the landscape.

Zavattarello honey and its benefits

Besides being a pleasure for the palate, Zavattarello honey also offers numerous health benefits. Rich in nutrients, antioxidants and antibacterial properties, this precious gold has been used since antiquity for its healing virtues. It is known for its soothing properties for the throat, its energising power and its contribution to the health of the immune system. A true natural elixir that combines pleasure and well-being.

Promotion and valorisation

To preserve and promote this wealth, Zavattarello honey is often celebrated at food and wine events and fairs, such as the Mushroom and Honey Festival held between September and October, where enthusiasts can taste this delicacy. It is never missing from local tables as an accompaniment to cheeses.
