The Lombardy Apennines offer cycling enthusiasts a myriad of scenic open-air routes. An unforgettable experience is the one that takes us on two wheels from the enchanting Staffora Valley, starting from Godiasco-Salice Terme to the summit of Monte Penice. This route offers a perfect mix of cycling challenges, breathtaking scenery and total immersion in unspoilt nature. Get ready to pedal along scenic roads, through lush woodland and tackle climbs as you explore one of Northern Italy's natural treasures.
Staffora Valley, an enchanting starting point
Our adventure begins in the Staffora Valley, amidst lush green landscapes, gently flowing streams and small rural villages that seem to have stood still in time. Ready for departure, we set off along the roads that climb the hills, leaving urban life behind and opening the door to a world of unspoilt nature. From Godiasco to Salice Terme, the road begins to climb gradually for about twenty kilometres until it reaches Varzi.

The climb to Monte Penice
As you pedal uphill, you face the first challenge of the route: the climb to Monte Penice. After crossing the Bridge of Sighs, the gradient rises from 5% to 8%. This climb will put us to the test, but the reward will be the spectacular panorama that awaits us at the top. Our legs are tired, but adrenaline and excitement carry us further up the winding road.

Charming landscapes and biodiversity
Along our route we are surrounded by beautiful landscapes and rich biodiversity. The forests that accompany us along the way are home to a rich variety of flora and fauna. Our eyes will be filled with wonder as we admire ancient trees, wild flowers and, with a bit of luck, some wild animals. Once you have reached San Pietro Casasco, you begin a 3km-long falsopiano between the hamlets of Menconico: Giarola, Cà del Bosco and Collegio (697m). After a few hairpin bends you reach Casa Ciocca, Piano Margarino and, at 1,000 metres, the l’Oratorio dell’Ospitaletto.
La magia del Monte Penice
Finally, after a last gentle climb, we reach Monte Penice (1149 m) and the Sanctuary of Santa Maria. The feeling of conquest and the satisfaction of having reached our destination is overwhelming. The panorama that opens up is nothing short of astonishing: mountain peaks on the horizon, valleys and woods as far as the eye can see. We enjoy a moment of peace and serenity, surrounded by the majesty of nature.
The return to the Staffora Valley
After resting and recovering, we prepare to return to the Staffora Valley. This time we face an exciting and pleasant descent, letting gravity guide us as we glide along the winding roads. The wind caresses our faces and our hearts fill with joy as we leave Monte Penice behind, taking with us the memories of this unforgettable cycling adventure.
Practical tips for the trip
Make sure you have a bike in good condition and suitable for the hilly terrain. Bring suitable clothing, a protective helmet and a water bottle for hydration along the way.
