Every year, between the end of September and the beginning of October, in the enchanting setting of the Castle of Montesegale, the Fair of San Damiano takes place, an event that brings to the fore the history, tradition and folklore of this charming village. Founded in 1994, the festival aims to recreate the atmosphere of times gone by, with the participation of historical figures and groups. The atmosphere is one of merriment, with music, traditional dances and popular songs providing the backdrop to the festivities. It is an event not to be missed for those who wish to travel back in time and immerse themselves in the culture and traditions of a time that no longer seems to belong to us. Montesegale, with its hills still green at this time of year and its spectacular views, becomes, for one day, the ideal setting for a fair that has now entered the calendar of events not to be missed.
The charm of historical re-enactment
The Fair of San Damiano is much more than a simple event: it is a real historical re-enactment that offers the public a glimpse of medieval life, with specific events based on historical documents, such as the investiture of Count Gambarana. An exciting spectacle in the authentic village of Montesegale. Count Gambarana was a noble feudal lord who ruled these lands during the Middle Ages. At that time, the investiture was a solemn ceremony during which the feudal lord officially received the power and authority over his land. During this ceremony, Count Gambarana was recognised as the legitimate sovereign and his rule over Montesegale was confirmed and sanctioned.
Food and wine and culinary traditions
Special attention is also paid to food and wine. Along the entire exhibition route there are gastronomic stands offering tastings of Varzi DOPone of the area's most renowned typical products, and De.Co. (Denominazione Comunale) products. Products that represent the area's heritage and tradition. Starting with Pansegale, a loaf of bread with walnuts, almonds, hazelnuts and dried figs that goes well with Varzi PDO salami, and the Trêsa, a hard bread with a slow leavening process and baked in terracotta ovens.
Historical figures and groups
But the San Damiano Fair offers much more. During the event, it is possible to admire games and handicrafts of the past, travelling shows, performances by jugglers, crossbowmen and swordsmen who compete in breathtaking duels that attract the attention of young and old alike. The carefully dressed and prepared historical characters and groups create a magical and exciting atmosphere, taking the audience on a journey back in time.
Historical culture and entert
The historical village comes to life thanks to the scenes, actions and choreographic aspects that animate the streets and rooms of the castle. Every detail has been taken care of to create a realistic and evocative setting. The public can stroll through the streets of the village and immerse themselves in an extraordinary festival.
A visit to the Church of Saints Cosmas and Damiano
In Montesegale, immersed in an enchanting natural setting, the ancient church of Saints Cosmas and Damian has a fascinating history. Its existence is documented as far back as 1523, when it was run by the parish priest Don Giacomo dei conti di Gambarana, who was also Bishop of Albenga. The current neoclassical façade has side pilasters and a portal surmounted by a large window, modified in the 1930s. Inside, on the left wall, there is the sandstone baptismal font from the 19th century. The two oval stoups and the statue of the Madonna with Child are from the same period. The altar is in polychrome marble from the 18th century.
