Bagnaria's 'City of Cherries

In springtime, the hills are coloured in shades of red and pink: the cherry trees are in blossom. A natural treasure of the Oltrepò Pavese, cherries are at home in Bagnaria, making them the symbol and emblem of a tradition that has been perpetuated thanks to the mild climate and fertile soil.

With their fleshy flesh and shiny, deep red skin, the cherries of Bagnaria are not only eaten fresh but also used as an ingredient in cooking. And in the 'cherry town' they know it well. It is here, in this small village in the Staffora Valley, that a refined and delicately flavoured first course has been elaborated that combines, in a perfect balance of flavours, sweet and savoury: risotto with cherries. Simple to prepare, ideal for surprising guests and pleasing to the eye because of its bright colour.

The 'Cherry Capital' in the Staffora Valley

Oltrepò Pavese cherries are renowned for their quality and sweetness. The mild climate and the fertile soil make this cultivation particularly suitable. The cherries are cultivated using traditional methods and harvested by hand during the ripening period, from the end of May to the first half of June. The cherries of Oltrepò Pavese, especially those of Bagnaria, are appreciated for their sweet and intense flavour and their crunchy and juicy texture. They are mainly used as fresh fruit, but can also be made into jams and liqueurs. Or in many other ways. Ideal for making cakes, tarts and ice-cream, Bagnara cherries can also be used to make sauces to accompany roast meats or mature cheeses. Stoned and cut in half, they add a touch of freshness and originality to summer dishes when used in a mixed salad.

The Cherry Festival

The Cherry Festival is a tradition that takes place every year in June to celebrate the symbolic fruit of the area and a product of excellence of the local agriculture. The first edition dates back to 1988 and over the years it has become a fixed date for local people and visitors who want to discover the beauty of the Oltrepò Pavese. During the festival it is possible to taste freshly picked cherries and dishes based on this sweet fruit. The festival is also an opportunity to buy local products such as Oltrepò Pavese wine, salami, cheese and many other specialities.

Characteristics and properties

Cherries belong to the Rosaceae family, like peaches, apricots, apples and strawberries. The cherry has a high content of antioxidants, especially anthocyanins, which give it its characteristic deep red colour. Native to Asia Minor and the Caucasus, it has been cultivated in Europe since ancient times and the ancient Romans were fond of it!

The cherry has diuretic and laxative properties, thanks to the presence of substances such as potassium and fibre. It also contains melatonin, a hormone that regulates the sleep-wake rhythm and can help improve sleep quality.

Between myth and tradition

In Greek mythology, the cherry tree was associated with Aphrodite, the goddess of love, beauty and fertility. According to legend, the first cherry tree was created when Adonis, Aphrodite's beloved, was killed by a wild boar while hunting. Adonis' blood fell to the ground and a cherry tree was born. Aphrodite, grieving for her beloved, cast a spell on the tree to produce sweet, juicy fruit, a symbol of the beauty and passion that bound them together.
