Discovering hidden treasures, from Pietragavina to Oramala

An itinerary starts from Pietragavina, a charming hamlet of Varzi, offering hikers the opportunity to immerse themselves in the uncontaminated beauty of woods and chestnut trees, but also to visit some of the area's historical sites. The route not only offers close contact with nature, but also the opportunity to discover strongholds and castles that tell the stories of the nobles who once ruled these lands. With an altitude difference of only 38 metres and a walking time of two hours (both outward and return), this walk is suitable for hikers of all experience levels.

Pietragavina, starting point

The route begins at an altitude of 755 metres, in the village of Pietragavina. The start is to the north-west, along the main road of the village, which runs alongside the castle. Mentioned in an imperial diploma by Frederick Barbarossa in 1164, this ancient castle offers a glimpse of the past, with its walls and towers rising above the surrounding hills. Built of stone, it is semicircular in shape and its imposing keep stands majestically within its walls. Originally designed as a strategic observation point, the keep is characterised by Guelph battlements and small loopholes.

At a fork in the road, leave the road that leads to the hamlet of Rosara and turn right, beginning a climb that soon leads to a wide dirt road.

Discovering the chestnut woods

Once on the dirt road, the route continues to the left, entering a forest characterised by the presence of majestic chestnut trees. Centuries-old trees that provide a magical atmosphere along the route. After passing the sports field, we come to a second crossroads, where we keep to the left, crossing, after about 1 km, the 'Eagle Castle' path, coming from Valverde Castle.

Continuing along the path, as the itinerary becomes more and more suggestive, we come to the 'La Ciap'ra' path on the left, coming from the hamlet of Rosara.

The castle of Oramala: a medieval jewel

The route continues through the woods until it reaches the scenic Oramala Castle, built in the 10th century by the Malaspina family. Situated atop a hill, it offers a spectacular panorama of the surrounding valleys. You can admire the majestic walls, towers and the remains of the ancient bastions that tell stories of wars and battles, as well as the noble families that dominated these lands centuries ago.

The return to Pietragavina will follow the same route as the outward journey.

The castle
