The wonders of the lavender fields, proposals for sustainable tourism

The lavender fields, with their breathtaking beauty, are one of the most fascinating attractions of the Oltrepò Pavese. Between June and July, the hills turn purple and the air is filled with an intense perfume. This has been the case for more than ten years, since some farms began to grow lavender, which attracts many tourists, especially from nearby Milan.

A plant of timeless beauty

Lavandula officinalis, the botanical name of the plant, comes from the verb lavare: the flowers of this beautiful plant have been used since ancient times to perfume the water used for washing. A use that was later transformed into the production of soaps and perfumes, and that led the Oltrepò Pavese area to discover its value, thanks to its favourable climate. Its brightly coloured flowers and delicate fragrance have always enchanted people.

Iconic places in Oltrepò Pavese

There are several places where you can admire splendid fields of lavender in bloom, all privately owned. One of the first farms to cultivate this typical plant was in Borgoratto Mormorolo. Today it is still in production.. But there are also beautiful lavender fields in Godiasco-Salice Terme, Fortunago, Ruino and Varzi.

Sustainable tourism in the lavender fields

Tourists who visit the lavender fields have the opportunity to immerse themselves in an enchanting environment. The farms that own the fields offer guided tours and allow visitors to take part in the lavender harvest and learn how the essential oils are extracted. You can then buy lavender products (such as soaps and creams), taste themed menus or spend a whole weekend in a fairytale setting. Thanks to the farmers who have understood the economic and environmental value of the lavender fields and have committed themselves to their protection, Oltrepò Pavese has developed a new form of sustainable tourism that promotes respect for the environment.

Health and wellness benefits

Lavender has long been known for its calming and therapeutic properties. Its essential oils are used in aromatherapy to reduce stress, promote sleep and improve general wellbeing. Its soothing and antioxidant properties also make it a valuable ingredient in skin and hair care.

The impact of lavender fields in the popular imagination

Lavender fields have become icons of beauty, often depicted in photographs, paintings, advertisements and even films. Cèzanne and Van Gogh are among the great painters who have been fascinated by them.

The perfect picture

It is impossible to return from an experience in a lavender field without taking a photograph. Perhaps with the help of wide-angle and telephoto lenses. What is the best way to photograph a field of flowers? There are many tips. For example, finding the point where the purple of the lavender ends and the green of the hills begins gives a break that enhances the image. Or you can focus on a detail, such as the stem of a flower or a bee resting on it. Want to be immortalised in the middle of a field of lavender? Wear white, pink or light blue, but also yellow.
