An ancient tradition

In Godiasco-Salice Terme, the St. Martin's Fair is an event with a long history, dating back to the Middle Ages. For centuries the fair has been held every year on St. Martin's Day, the eleventh of November, and despite the passing of the years it has kept its essence intact.

A multi-sensory experience

This festive day offers a unique multi-sensory experience. The streets of the village are filled with colours, smells and sounds, creating an exciting atmosphere. Stalls set up along the streets of the historic centre offer traditional products: from local handicrafts to the gastronomic delights of the Oltrepò Pavese area. It is the perfect opportunity to immerse yourself in the culture and traditions of the area.

Musicians, folk groups and street performers entertain the public in a festive and joyful atmosphere. Visitors can watch demonstrations of old crafts and take part in traditional games for young and old. The fair becomes a meeting place for the community, where everyone feels part of something special.

Promoting local heritage

The 11th of November festival in Godiasco - Salice Terme plays an important role in the promotion of the local heritage, promoting the traditions, handicrafts and typical products of the Oltrepò Pavese, helping to preserve the culture and identity of the area. A walk among the stalls is a journey into a land rich in flavours and good craftsmanship.

St Martin's Day

St Martin's Day is traditionally associated with agriculture and the end of the agricultural cycle, when the end or beginning of agricultural contracts was decided. In the Middle Ages, agricultural work was regulated by annual contracts between landowners and peasants, which set out the terms and conditions of work for the following year, including the rights, duties and remuneration of the peasants.

St Martin's Day, which fell in mid-November, ideally marked the end of autumn and the beginning of winter. At this time, agricultural activities were greatly reduced, crops were harvested, animals were taken to their winter shelters and the land was prepared for the rest of the season. As agricultural activity slowed down, many annual agricultural contracts were renewed or cancelled at this time. It was a time when farmers had time to discuss the terms of the new contract or look for new work opportunities elsewhere. St Martin's Day was also associated with thanksgiving for the harvest.
